K-Pop Songs of the Summer Review: Summer 127 by NCT 127

The image is from Lina of Hallyureviews. Thank you Lina!

Over time, the K-Pop Review community has grown from a few individuals into a full subset of the internet. Now, TheBiasList, Kbopped, 10/10 – Music, Hallyureviews, Jei’s Kulture Notes, Deforested Music, A Floating Realm in the Corner, 8.5 Music, and Kpopreviewed are working together, to create a series, where we review some of our favorite collections of songs from the huge K-Pop catalogue, with each of us choosing a song each to fit the theme. August’s theme is ‘Summer’, so here we all are with our favourite K-Pop summer songs to bring some refreshing sounds to your speakers.

Be sure to check out everyone’s posts in the links below!

Favorite line: “Our hearts are hotter than the sun” – Doyoung

Welcome to the Kpop Blogger Olympics! I’ve been graciously invited by deforested music to partake in one of the most exciting summer eleganzas to ever grace the kpop blogger sphere! It took awhile to choose a song, especially because I did a 3-part video series filled with all of my favorite summer bops but I finally settled on one. One of the greatest bsides in the whole kpop genre. And it was released on my birthday no less! Summer 127 by NCT 127, my favorite NCT subgroup! I can’t wait to dive deep into this song and relish in all it’s glories all over again.

Man I would kill to get a music video for this song!

I remember the first time I listened to this song I was instantly hooked from that piano in the intro. I don’t know why but it sounds like the pianist is pressing real hard onto those keys with a lot of conviction. Or their probably just a bit louder than most piano intros. I like the first explanation better. Jaehyun always brings it and Taeyong vocally sounds a lot better and more clear than he did in his single “Long Flight“. Additionally, I think that Haechan has one of the most unique vocals in the industry. It’s nasally in the right places and I would like to see him release some solo material like Taeyong or do some features like Mark. Doyoung served some nice Main Vocal material on a nice silver platter as always.

Additionally, I like how the pre-chorus kind of dies down a bit in energy which makes the following chorus hit harder than if it didn’t. I’d like to visualize it as jumping back into a swimming pool. It feels just as refreshing as the first time round. Also I’m a sucker for high vocals being paired with deep rapping so the chorus with Doyoung, Mark, Jaeil (my fellow birthday sharer) and Jaehyun really sold it for me! However, I’m not gonna lie the transition from the second verse to the pre-chorus felt a bit sudden. I really would have liked to have a few more verses before diving back into it but it’s not too much of a bother.

Now, let’s get into the infamous physical fitness rap with Taeyong and Mark that quite a few NCTzens were shocked about. Not a lot of kpop songs have lyrics containing “twerking”, “shake that ass” (a phrase I tremendously despise), “bad ass” and “krumping” so hearing that completely caught me off guard. I’m used to western songs containing these phrases but definitely not kpop songs unless it’s from someone hardcore like G-Dragon or something. I really enjoyed how the beat kind of hollowed down to fully flesh out the dirty seductiveness of Taeyong’s part. In all honesty I kind of wish that Mark and Taeyong switched parts because I think it makes sense to have lyrics switch from “Let’s gracefully slow dance together” to “let’s grind so hard until we run out of breath”.

Anyways to finally conclude, Summer 127 is 100% the summer song of the century and it ticks off all the crucial boxes for me:

  • Groovy dance song ✓
  • Groovy dance song from SM Entertainment ✓
  • Catchy post-chorus ✓
  • Catchy….everything! Everything is catchy! ✓
  • High vocals paired with deep rapping ✓
  • No awkward sounding English lyrics ✓
  • Great intro ✓
  • Stable pre-chorus to chorus transition ✓

That ends my review for Summer 127. Next up on the floor is KBopped also known as Arpydarpy who will review a dazzling song from an awesome group who are way too overlooked in this genre. This song is so good your finger will be hovering over the “add to playlist” button in just a matter of seconds.

  2. Thanks for the shout-out at the end of the review KH!

The fun facts for this week:

    – Based on KH’s video series and blog posts, Summer 127 is one of two songs now to get a 10 from her, the other being Anda’s What You Waiting For, which was the song I personally had predicted she’d pick.

    – I get I’m not the only one who had to think twice on which song KH would pick, when she was filling in the initial Google Doc form, she wrote for her song pick (Still deciding… it’s too hard!)

    – KH was also one of the first people to respond affirmatively to my request for the feature, thanks KH!

For good reviews for those new to her blog, I’d suggest the following:

Plus, her summer video series is absolutely essential 🙂

    Thanks for participating KH!

Love your description for Arpydarpy’s song choice 🙂

And finally, I really enjoy Summer 127 as a song. The Bias List is the only K-Pop blogger other than KH in the feature to review the song, and he gave it 8.75.

  3. This Song right here is absolutely spectacular! I love the sticky house piano which opens up the track, It’s so breezy and melancholic and makes for an instantly compelling introduction. And then we have that incredible chorus, the melody is light-on-it’s feet and pulsing with life and groove, and when we arrive to the bridge, we are introduced to a killer rap section and a new bed of instrumentation.
Love this track! and a great one to review, Thank you so much for this BlueRasberrySyrup.

Is Arpydarpy reviewing “The Star of Stars”? that’s the best I can come up with lol.

  4. What a GREAT pick! Like you say, a truly fantastic B-side! Guaranteed to get us all dancing. I’m not always the biggest appreciator of a rubbery synth but the eclectic mix of instruments here make it feel like a festival! This conjures up great memories!
